However, there are a remarkably large number of cities in Massachusetts that issued porcelain license plates. In fact, there were as many porcelain producing jurisdictions in Massachusetts as in all of the rest of New England combined. These plates stretch out over a period of 28 years, from through , and were used to license everything from automobiles and buses to milk carts, jobbers, vendors and vegetable peddlers. Although there are an amazing 52 different porcelain varieties known, each is remarkably scarce with no more than a handful of surviving examples of any particular plate. Syllabub Syllabub belongs to the English family of creamy dessert beverages combining dairy products and sweet wine. Originally a holiday beverage, syllabub invited many interesting variations based on viscosity and application. Dessert syllabubs , akin to trifle, flourished in the early 20th century. Its defining characteristic is the mixing of white wine or cider or fruit juice with sweetened cream, so curdling the cream, but from earliest times it has diverged into two basic types: The former was made with thicker cream, often reinforced by beaten egg whites, the latter with single cream or even milk, sometimes introduced directly from the cow’s udder into a bowl containing the wine and other ingredients.
Both sorts remained very popular until the mid-nineteenth century As for the name syllabub, that remains a complete mystery. Early spellings include solybubbe, sullabub, selybube, and even sillibouk, and probably it was originally just a fanciful meaningless coinage. Syllbub became the main form around , probably due to the influence of the word syllable. The agitating is accomplished by methods varying from milking directly from the cow into a bowl of rich cream and wine to the use of a charming ‘syllabub churn,’ and ingenious device that produces a fine long-lasting froth.
In addition to its other virtues, wine serves to lightly curdle the milk and ‘set’ the fluffy mixture. This fortifying dessert drink was known by Tudor times and became enormously popular in colonial America. As ice cream became more available, the cool creamy syllabub came to be considered increasingly old-fashioned, although it did linger in the South Randolph’s recipe is not at all traditional and is quite quite beside the point.

At least all the cash splashed on Amazon gifts will go to a good cause. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos needs more money. We are returning to a Victorian era of haves and have nots. The wealth gap is widening to a yawning abyss not seen since the turn of the last century. It has reached a point where we are literally tripping over growing numbers of homeless people sleeping on the streets in our big cities.
One simple option would be to give some of their fortunes away.

These plates were on a black on white background, usually marked with “C of A” at the top of the plate — an abbreviation of Commonwealth of Australia and the leading Z being red to further distinguish it from other state plates. Issuance of Z prefixed plates used for same purposes was passed onto the states after Only New South Wales and Victoria chose to use their state base colours rather than the standard black on reflective white, with the use of red embossed Z prefix.
The Northern Territory still uses the older format and same “C of A” legend at top of the plate. This has been updated in November showing C Australian Government crest image 1. Reviews Brunel in South Wales, Volume 1: Reviewed by Martin Barnes. It might accurately have been called ‘A wide-ranging account of the origins of the traffic in coal and iron from Merthyr to Cardiff in the early 19th century, how it was handled first by the Merthyr or Penydarren Tramroad and the Glamorganshire Canal and later by the Taff Vale Railway, how this railway was designed and.
But publishers have not used long titles like that since the early 19th century. Stephen Jones has produced a tour de force which, let us expect, will be matched by the next two volumes covering, inter alia, the South Wales Railway. The text, illustrations, references and notes, bibliography and multiple indices [indexes] demonstrate that this is the work of a historian of the highest calibre. Brunel was noted for his reluctance to delegate but, for the Taff Vale Railway, he seems to have risked, uneasily, a lot of authority to his number two, the distractingly named George Bush.
Jones is quite sure that Brunel designed the Goitre Coed viaduct, including having the fairly good idea of using hexagonal piers, but probably not much else. The paradox of Brunel’s use of the standard gauge on this railway at the same time as he was promoting the broad as so superior everywhere else is mentioned but could have been analysed in more detail.

This gave me pause to think about all kinds of numbers, found on flat- and hollowware. Most collectors are familiar with termini technici like scratch weight, British registration mark, etc. An article giving more info about all these numbers seemed like a good idea. Let’s start with the ‘easy ones’. Due to the common and unfortunate practice of splitting up table and flatware services at auction sales or between family members, ‘pairs’ with the numbers 3 and 4 might be offered.
A ‘pair’ with the numbers 1 and 2 might be a true pair or the first ones in a series of a larger number of items.

The Victorian Era The Industrial Revolution The era known as the Industrial Revolution was a period of fundamental changes in agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and social structure. An economy based on manual labor and skilled artisans was replaced by one dominated by industry, machinery, and mass production. Energy was a major impetus for this conversion from an agricultural society to an industrial one.
Animal and human power were the primary sources of energy until James Watt perfected the steam engine in What started it all: Conditions that promoted the Industrial Revolution were advances in agricultural techniques and practices resulting in an increased supply of food and raw materials. The building of roads, canals, and eventually railways enabled expanded trade. Many of these conditions were so closely interrelated that increased activity in one spurred an increase in activity in another.
